It is tough. Moissanite is 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale. Diamond is 10. Cubic zirconia is 8 to 8.5. An engagement ring gets worn every day for years, and moissanite is built for that.

Step 2: Think in millimeters, not just carats

Moissanite is about 10% lighter than diamond, so its weight is quoted in DEW, diamond equivalent weight. A "1 carat" moissanite is the size of a 1 carat diamond, even though it weighs a bit less.

What your eye sees is the width of the stone. Here are the round sizes:

Tip: slim fingers make a stone look bigger. A 6.5mm stone on a size 5 finger can look like more than a 1 carat.

Step 3: Choose the setting

6-prong solitaire. Two extra claws for extra security and a rounder, softer outline around the stone.
Bezel. A metal rim hugs the stone. Very secure, snag-free and practical for active hands, with slightly less light coming in from the sides.

Step 4: Choose the metal
