Moissanite doesn't get cloudy the way glass or cubic zirconia does. When it looks dull, it's almost always a thin film of lotion, skin oil or soap sitting on the back of the stone and blocking the light. Take that film off and the fire comes straight back.
Here's how to do it at home in about five minutes.
What you need
- A small bowl of warm water (not boiling)
- A few drops of mild dish soap, with no bleach or lemon additives
- A soft baby toothbrush
- A lint-free cloth or microfiber cloth
How to clean moissanite, step by step
- Soak for 10 to 20 minutes. Drop the piece in the soapy water. This loosens the oil built up under the stone.
- Brush the back of the stone. Most of the grime sits underneath, between the prongs. Brush gently in small circles. Don't press hard on the setting.
- Rinse under warm running water. Close the sink drain first. Every jeweler has a story about a ring that went down the pipe.
- Dry with a lint-free cloth. Pat, then buff lightly. Paper towels can leave fibers in the prongs.
That's it. Do this once every week or two if you wear your piece daily, and your stone will look the way it did the day it arrived.
Tennis bracelets and necklaces need a little extra care
A moissanite tennis bracelet or tennis necklace has dozens of small settings, and each one traps a little residue. Soak it flat in the bowl rather than coiled up, and brush along the line of stones in one direction. Check the clasp while you're at it: if it feels loose, have it looked at before it opens on its own.
Can you use an ultrasonic cleaner on moissanite?
The stone itself handles it fine. Moissanite is one of the hardest gemstones you can wear, at 9.25 on the Mohs scale (more on that in our guide to moissanite hardness). The metal is the real question. Skip ultrasonic machines and steam on 14K gold filled pieces, on pavé settings and on anything with colored or black moissanite. Warm soapy water does the job just as well.
What to avoid
- Chlorine. Take your jewelry off before the pool or the hot tub. Chlorine attacks gold alloys and plating over time.
- Toothpaste and baking soda. They're abrasive and can scratch the metal around the stone.
- Bleach, acetone and household sprays. They won't hurt the moissanite, but they can discolor the setting.
- Putting jewelry on before lotion or perfume. Make it the last thing you put on and the first thing you take off.
How to keep the sparkle between cleanings
Store each piece separately, ideally in a lined case, so harder stones don't rub against softer metals. Fasten tennis bracelets before you put them away so they don't tangle. For more, read our full jewelry care guide.
Quick answers
Does moissanite get cloudy over time? No. Moissanite doesn't turn cloudy or lose its fire. If it looks hazy, it needs a clean, not a replacement.
How often should I clean my moissanite ring? Every one to two weeks for an everyday ring, and once a month for pieces you wear occasionally.
Can I wear moissanite in the shower? The stone won't mind, but soap film builds up fast and makes it look dull. Taking it off is the easy fix.
